Abstract

This article examines the transformation of inherited religious, historical, literary, and mythic materials in contemporary Arabic poetry. It distinguishes the mere citation of a familiar name or episode from the productive reconfiguration of its semantic role within a new poetic structure. Using a qualitative, interpretive, and comparative method, it discusses selected poetic practices associated with Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, Abd al-Wahhab al-Bayati, Salah Abd al-Sabur, Amal Dunqul, and Mahmoud Darwish. The argument is that heritage becomes aesthetically consequential when its original cultural associations interact with contemporary experiences of displacement, resistance, political disillusionment, mortality, and collective memory. The article proposes four criteria for assessing successful heritage appropriation: structural integration, semantic transformation, historical awareness, and interpretive openness. It also identifies limitations of symbolic overloading and the risk of reducing complex historical figures to ready-made political emblems. Rather than treating tradition and innovation as opposites, the study reads their relation as an ongoing negotiation through which poetic meaning is produced.
